British diplomat. We visit Japan in 1862 and serve interpreter of Yokohama U.K. legation. It was pioneer of diplomat to Japan which could use Japanese freely, and, including Hirobumi Ito, deepened friendship with many influential people who formed Japan for the Meiji period and helped the stationing in Japan minister parks at the time.

We left Japan once in 1884, but return to our post as minister in 1895. In front of British legation (the existing embassy) of Ichibancho, cherry tree planted in 1898 by life of sugar still makes beautiful flower bloom in spring. There is much writing about Japan including "the Meiji Restoration that one diplomat saw".
